Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
