Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
