As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
